Styles Of Elegant Civil War Gowns

By Shari Swanson

Women wore several layers of material back during the time of the Civil War that made up the complete ensemble each day. At all times being appropriately covered up was important regardless of the surrounding conditions. These garments were highly fashionable and certainly demanded attention, they were very elegant Civil War gowns.

Depending upon the age group a woman fell in would determine many things like the length of certain pieces of material. Each layer provided a significant contribution to the outfit worn. First would be the pantalets, known as bloomers to some. Made from cotton pantalets would reach as high as the knee or as low as the ankles. An older woman would wear them to her ankles.

A chemise would be the next piece to be worn for the dress. The chemise was important to help protect the material of a corset from body oils and smells. While wearing the gown a chemise would not only offer protection it prevented the dress from restricting and pinching the body.

The part of the outfit that offered the most support was the corset worn next to the chemise. Made with cotton and whale bones, this was an essential part of wearing any gown of the period. The orset worn made a smooth line from bust to waist that created a beautiful look.

Next, a camisole was worn to help reduce wear and tear on the corset. With corsets being so complex and intricate washing was something not preferred and keeping them clean was essential. Following the camisole a woman would wear a petticoat that provided her with comfort and modesty.

Finally the hoop skirt, over petticoats and gown would be fitted. Most Civil War Gowns were very eye catching and glamorous because of the patterns and vibrant colors they would be made of. These dresses established a woman's place and rank in her social circle.
